Made in June 2021. The Eleventh Shove Ha'Penny board in the Oakes & Oakes series takes a little inspiration from football... with a little bit of nostalgia... For all the England football fans and history fans this set is complimented by five half pennies dating from 1966.

Made from solid oak with a walnut coin stopper. The surface has been hand sanded to a super fine grade, and oiled with natural oil making those coins glide beautifully with the grain of the oak.

Two scoring lanes have been painted with chalkboard paint allowing for ease to chalk up the scores. The nine bays on the board are divided by 1.5 mm deep grooves. This allows for the Oakes & Oakes brass line checker to be used when players are in dispute about whether the coin is within the bay or not. A front oak baton on the underside holds the board solidly in place on a table during play.

The board measures : 54 x 30 x 4 cm

Shove Ha'penny is a true British pub game classic that dates back to the middle ages. It's both challenging and entertaining, with skilful yet simple gameplay. It is therefore suitable for children and adults and is enjoyed both casually at home or in pubs and more seriously in tournaments, leagues and competitions.

Branded with the Oakes & Oakes logo and hand numbered with red paint on the baton.

The game wouldn't be complete without a stick of chalk, rules of play and an Oakes & Oakes bag.

Every board is handmade using hand tools. Although the design is the same, each board is essentially unique because of the following two factors. Wood is a natural material, hence the grain, colour and tone will vary from board to board. Secondly, the boards are handmade by one maker. They each have their own character created by the maker. Every board has been numbered. As games get played and memories made, the players will leave their marks further adding to its history.
Caring for your board

It won’t require much maintenance, but there are a few things to consider. Please keep wooden boards away from areas of damp, high humidity or sudden changes in temperature. Beware that UV light, such as sunlight can subtly change the colour of wood over a period of time. Long direct exposures to sun can cause the woods to crack. Overall boards require little more than dusting with a soft cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents to clean. Over time the board may require re-oiling or beeswaxing. Please avoid putting oil and wax on the scoring lanes.

Rules of the Game

Each player shoves five coins up the board in each turn. To prepare each coin to be pushed, the player positions the coin at the front of the board with the rear of the coin just sticking over the front edge of the board. Any part of the hand can then be used to shove the coin up the board. If a coin does not actually reach the first line on the board, that coin does not count as having been played and can be shoved again.

At the end of the turn each coin that is completely within a ‘bed’ (between two horizontal lines and within the bordering vertical lines) scores a point for that player in that bed. The points are tallied with chalk marks in the squares at either end of the bed on the edge of the board, one player owning the right side, the other, the left. The aim is to get three chalk marks in each of the squares - three scores in each of the nine beds. However, once three scores have been made in a bed, any further scores in that bed will be given to the opponent instead, unless the opponent already has three scores in the bed. The one exception to this is the winning point which must be scored properly by the winning player, not given away.

When there is a dispute if a coin is within a bay, bring out the supplied brass checker to settle the score. It’s the Oakes & Oakes analogue version of Hawk-Eye. Place the brass in the disputed groove at one end of the line. Run it through the line, if the coin moves then the point is disallowed. There is less friction when running through a groove if the brass is held vertically in the hand, so that the shortest side of the brass runs through the grooves.

Good players will attempt to cause a coin to knock onto one or more previously pushed coins in an effort to improve their position as well as trying to make a score with the coin being played. A little thought is also required - it is not usually a good move to score the third coin in a bed until towards the end of a game...

Variant - Progressive Shove Ha’penny

Around the Oxford area, a modification to the above rules allows for “breaks” in the same vein as for Billiards, Snooker or Croquet. In this, any scoring coin is retrieved at the end of a turn and allowed to be replayed for another time. Once these replayed coins have been played again, any scoring coins are again replayed and so on. In this way, a turn can go on for some time and it has been known for the starting player to win the game before the second player has been allowed a turn. It is recommended that a coin finishing in a bed in which that player has already made 3 scores should not be replayed, although this rule may vary according to the location.

Blitz round

As three points per bed can be a long game, for a quicker game why not try one point per bed.
