Made in September 2021. The twenty-second Shove Ha'Penny board in the Oakes & Oakes series. This set is complimented by five half pennies dated 1920. Just over 100 years old the coins are naturally worn and smoothed providing a lovely glide across board during play.

The board is handmade from solid oak with a walnut coin stopper. The surface has been hand sanded to a super fine grade, oiled with natural oil bringing out the grain along with helping those coins glide beautifully with the grain of the oak.

Two scoring lanes have been painted with chalkboard paint allowing for ease to chalk up the scores. The nine bays on the board are divided by 1.5 mm deep grooves. This allows for the Oakes & Oakes brass line checker to be used when players are in dispute about whether the coin is within the bay or not. A front oak baton on the underside holds the board solidly in place on a table during play.

Branded with the Oakes & Oakes logo each board is numbered on the oak baton.

The board measures : 54 x 30 x 4 cm

This set comes with the Classic black & white brass line checker. The game wouldn't be complete without a stick of chalk, rules of play and an Oakes & Oakes storage bag.

Shove Ha'penny is a true British pub game classic that dates back to the middle ages. It's both challenging and entertaining, with skilful yet simple gameplay. It is therefore suitable for children and adults and is enjoyed both casually at home or in pubs and more seriously in tournaments, leagues and competitions.

Inspired by the rediscovery of my grandfather’s board game patent, Oakes & Oakes is an artisan concept project officially founded in October 2020. Having never had the pleasure of meeting Harry, the project began as an attempt to make a connection and create a memory through the act of collaboration. The idea was simple; using Harry’s words and drawings contained in his patent as the guide, i would make his game using natural solid woods.

The ethos behind the Oakes & Oakes project is to celebrate historic games from all cultural heritages, preserve traditions, create new ones, bring people together and ultimately become heirlooms to be passed down to multiple generations.

In the same way this project started with the idea of making connections, the activity of playing these games provides a way of connecting and reconnecting. A social past time that negates the digital realm.

Using responsibly sourced natural solid woods all the games are crafted with hand tools, hand painted and finished with traditional non-toxic natural oils.

As games get played and memories made, the players leave their marks further adding their own history.
